I have been in the educational sector for more than 18 years, but I have only been teaching at the Center for three years. My background is in Special Education which included heading the Special Education department in Mistissini, working as an Autistic Specialist for the English Montreal School Board as well as working as a resource teacher at Kahnawake Survival School.
I really enjoy providing small-group instruction to students with various skill levels and tailoring educational plans to accommodate and meet each student’s specific learning goals. Dan Phillips

AEP Carpentry Teacher

Currently working as the carpentry instructor for the First Nations Regional Education Center (FNRAEC) in Kahnawake. I’ve worked as a local carpenter in Kahnawake for about three decades.
The FNRAEC in partnership with Tewatohnhi’saktha and other local school boards offer various construction programs such as Builders of the Future and AEP Carpentry.
At this time, I am instructing students in the AEP Carpentry program. In the AEP program, students will be learning and developing their carpentry skills. The topics we work on are ASP health and safety training on construction sites, proper conduct while on the job, tool safety and use of materials. Teaching how to read prints to properly frame a structure. How to do interior and finishing work along with other basic construction techniques. In this AEP Carpentry construction program, we learn about the importance of working together as a team working in a healthy environment. This is a hands-on learning approach of taking technical construction of structures from paper to reality.
In my time being an employee here at FNREC it is a joy to see the growing interest in the carpentry programs. I take pride in passing on my knowledge and developing connections with students. In seeing firsthand the connection, growth, understanding and development of this cohort, I look forward to the endless possibilities for the further development of the FNRAEC carpentry programs.
